Best GPS Trackers for Cars in Australia [2025 Guide]

Want to monitor your car, ute, or caravan without making it obvious? Whether securing a personal vehicle or managing a small fleet, a reliable GPS tracker is your best line of defence. In this updated 2025 guide, we’ll explore the best GPS trackers for cars in Australia, including battery-powered, OBD, and hardwired options from Keep Track GPS. All devices are designed for Australian conditions and use the Telstra 4G/5G network to ensure maximum coverage.

Why Use a GPS Tracker in Australia?

Australia’s vast distances and frequent vehicle theft make GPS tracking a must-have for peace of mind. With a quality GPS tracker, you can:

  • Track your car’s real-time location via smartphone
  • Set up geofences for movement alerts
  • Monitor driver behaviour and route history
  • Improve safety for teen drivers or vulnerable loved ones
  • Protect caravans, work utes, or valuable tools

Keep Track GPS offers tracking solutions tailored to Australian drivers, with optional features like Bluetooth temperature sensors, door sensors, and driver ID add-ons.

Top Battery-Powered GPS Trackers for Cars and Assets

Battery-powered GPS trackers are ideal if you’re after a discreet, no-wiring solution. These devices are compact, easy to install, and perfect for tracking cars, trailers, or assets across Australia. Here are our most popular models:

Keep Track Remora3 – Rugged & Long-Lasting

Our Remora3 features D-size lithium batteries that last up to 5 years and provide daily location updates. It is great for cold chain tracking or storing inside a ute canopy. It is also compatible with Bluetooth sensors for door status and temperature monitoring.

Keep Track Oyster3 – Compact & Reliable

The Oyster3 is small and tough, available in Australian and global models. It’s water-resistant and perfect for covert installations inside consoles or asset boxes.

Keep Track Barra GPS – Ultra Discreet

The Barra GPS is slim and lightweight, designed for easy concealment, and is ideal for tracking small vehicles, toolboxes, or high-value freight.

Keep Track Yabby GPS – Budget-Friendly & Smart

The Yabby GPS is one of our most affordable 4G GPS trackers for cars and light assets. Compact enough to fit in a glovebox or bag, it’s great for renters or occasional users.

Hardwired vs OBD GPS Trackers – What’s Right for You?

A powered tracker might be the better choice if you want live tracking, vehicle health data, or driver monitoring.

Keep Track G150 Extreme – Our Most Advanced Vehicle Tracker

The G150 Extreme offers hybrid tracking with optional satellite fallback, which is ideal for remote areas. Other features include driver ID, immobilisation, and Bluetooth support.

Keep Track Dart3 – Driver ID & Bluetooth Ready

The Dart3 is perfect for Fleet use and supports Driver ID fobs, harsh driving alerts, and Bluetooth sensors. It is great for mining, civil, or tradie fleets.

Keep Track G70 – IP67 Rated & Built Tough

The G70 is waterproof and ideal for vehicles, trailers, or machinery in rugged environments. Its hardwired installation ensures that it is always powered.

Keep Track Bolt OBD2 – Plug & Go Simplicity

The Bolt is perfect for everyday drivers, teens, and personal safety. Simply plug it into your OBD2 port to instantly start tracking with no tools or wiring.

How Long Do Batteries Last in GPS Trackers?

Battery life depends on how often your tracker updates its location. Here’s a quick guide:

  • Daily updates: Up to 10 years on devices like the Oyster3 or Remora3
  • Multiple updates per day: Expect 1–5 years, depending on frequency
  • Real-time tracking: Requires hardwired or OBD trackers for best performance

All devices have low-battery alerts sent directly to the Keep Track GPS app.

How Do GPS Trackers Work in Australia?

All Keep Track GPS trackers use a Telstra-compatible SIM card to send location data over the 4G/5G mobile network. You can view this data on our web portal or mobile app (available on iOS and Android).

In areas without coverage, like underground car parks or remote locations, your tracker will store data and upload it once a signal returns. The G150 Extreme Hybrid has an Iridium satellite fallback (optional) for Australia’s most remote areas for extreme coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does a GPS tracking device update its location data?
Real-time GPS trackers like the Bolt, Dart3, G70, and G150 typically update every 60 to 180 seconds. Battery-powered trackers can update once or several times daily, depending on your settings and subscription plan.
How does geofencing work with GPS trackers?
With the Keep Track GPS app, you can draw digital boundaries (geofences) on a map. Get instant alerts if your vehicle or asset enters or leaves that area — ideal for caravans, tools, or parked vehicles.
Is it legal to use a GPS tracker in Australia?
In most Australian states, you can legally track any vehicle you own. If someone else drives it (employee, teen, contractor), it’s best practice to get their consent and check local laws on surveillance or privacy.

Hi Mat
Please take a look at our battery-powered GPS trackers, the Oyster 3 or Remora 3, as they have the best features for vehicle tracking. However, with our battery-powered devices, they are designed for non-powered assets, so there locations are somewhat delayed. They will take a location every 2 minutes and update it every 30 minutes, or if the vehicle is stationary for longer than 3 minutes, it will be classified as the end of the trip. If you require more detailed location updates, then look at the Bolt2 OBD2 device. You can also add a splitter cable to the car’s OBD2 port for near-live location tracking.
